AIPS Emerging Scholars Symposium

Every two years, AIPS hosts an Emerging Scholars of Pakistan Studies Symposium (previously known as the AIPS Junior Scholars Conference) in conjunction with the Annual Conference on South Asia.  AIPS encourages abstracts from (but not restricted to) disciplines such as Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, History, Literature, Religious Studies, Art History, Music, Women’s Studies, Film, Communications Studies, etc.  Graduate Students who are enrolled in a PhD program in a US academic institution and have ABD status, especially those writing their dissertations are encouraged to apply. Post-Doctoral candidates who completed their PhD in or after 2017 are also eligible. There is no citizenship requirement. AIPS will fund travel, lodging, and per diem for all awardees.

This half-day symposium will take place on Thursday, October 20 during the Annual Conference on South Asia in Madison, WI.  It showcases the new research being done by approximately six to eight junior scholars in the field of Pakistan Studies.  AIPS identifies senior scholars who will read the accepted papers and provide feedback, mentorship, and guided discussion after the presentations.  These conferences have been central in enabling emerging scholars to network with others in their field and have resulted in significant outcomes, including multiple projects started, mentorships forged, articles written, and dissertations revised, edited and completed.  Additionally, a few of those who attended previous conferences (as recent as 2016) have received tenure-track positions in academic institutions in the US.
